I thought the movie was absolutely delicious, but then I’m not exactly a “Janeite” so I don’t feel that intense loyalty to her works that might inspire me to reject all other non-literary versions of her stories. Character development is always better in novels than on screen, don’t you think? So in that respect a movie could never measure up to what Austen did so brilliantly in her book. My husband, who had never read the book, really enjoyed the movie. And our 11 year old daughter loved it too, and she won’t be ready to appreciate the book for at least a few years. So for them and many others too, it was a great way to begin their foray into Austens world and to start to appreciate the genious of her works.
Perhaps....what some might be turned off about in the movie is that it doesn’t give as an acute exploration of the pitfalls of pride and prejudice as the book does. Oh well, the realm of liturature is better suited for the mind and visual arts (movies, plays) for the emotions anyhow.
