I am looking for an excellent book on the history of the Puritans.  If y’all know of one, please let me know - thank you.

Hi Jenni.

You can’t go wrong starting with The New England Mind: the Seventeenth Century, by Perry Miller.  It’s not just good history, but also a piece of history, as it redefined our view of this period--one of the first modern, sympathetic treatments of the puritans--and established their role in the history of American consciousness.

Thank you, tjohn - that book sounds perfect.  Here is the book that re-sparked my interest in Puritans:

The Valley of Vision: A Collection of Puritan Prayers & Devotions edited by Arthur Bennett.

It is lovely.

Jenni,
As a new member of EDB fora, I saw your post on Puritans.  Perry Miller is a good place to start; you might also look at Patrick Collinson’s History of Elizabethan Puritanism.  In terms of Puritan spirituality, you might peruse JI Packer’s Quest for Godliness, and a helpful recent publication entitled The Devoted Life by Kapic and Gleason (IVP).  This latter gives you a bit of a sense of the range of Puritanism.

Full disclosure. I am a Presbyterian! smile

You *must* check out Leland Ryken’s excellent “Living Saints”. Shatters many misconceptions about the Puritans.
